As we shared previously, International Students Inc. held its annual staff conference in Japan. We left on June 19, arrived June 20, and then spent five days in training, worship, and vision casting. It was inspiring to join nearly 300 staff members worshiping together and being reminded why sharing God’s love with international students is worth it, no matter where they are in the world.

Japan is a major destination for international students—including many from English-speaking countries—so ISI has launched a growing ministry there. More than 435,000 international students attended Japanese universities in 2025. Our presence was a tremendous encouragement to the local team, which serves in a country with a much smaller Christian presence than we experience in the United States. In fact, less than 1% of Japan’s population identifies as Christian.

A special thank you to ISI for hosting a separate kids conference for staff children, making it possible for our entire family to attend. The kids grew in their understanding of Christ, missions, and Scripture while making wonderful friendships with other missionary kids. After the conference, we took the opportunity to explore some of Japan’s most iconic sights. It is an amazing country with wonderful people, rich history, fascinating culture, incredible food, and remarkable safety. We made memories that will last a lifetime.  Words can’t begin to describe how special it was to fly overseas as a whole family for ministry. We absolutely loved it!

Another exciting update is that on June 11, Ruth, one of our former Christian students, got married to her fiance Kevin in Houston! Although Jenn had hoped to attend, only I (Joey) was able to go. One of the values ISI teaches is “full-cycle ministry”—walking with students through other life seasons, whether that means celebrating weddings or even visiting them in their home countries.

Ruth and Kevin were overjoyed on their wedding day. Being there meant a great deal to them, especially since only some immediate family from India were able to join. To make the weekend even more special, the wedding became a reunion of sorts, bringing together more than a dozen former students from Ruth’s graduating class-–both believers and non-believers. Even fellow staff and volunteers (like our pastors) were in attendance! It was a beautiful reminder that the relationships built through ministry often continue long after students leave campus.
